Logan County District 2 County Commissioner Charlie Meadows has responded to a campaign flyer accusing him of promoting liberal policies. The flyer, mailed to District 2 residents with strong voting histories last Tuesday, was paid for by Sooner Conservatives Action LLC.
The mailer, titled “Sorry Charlie… Liberal Policies Don’t Belong in Logan County,” accuses Meadows of revealing his “true colors” as a RINO (Republican In Name Only). The flyer further shows that Meadows supports removing county commissioners from the Open Meetings Act, which it claims would allow the county government to operate in secrecy.
The flyer highlights Meadows’s statement at a Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting in July 2023: “One of my goals as commissioner is to try to get the county commissioners removed from the Open Meeting Act.” Listen to those comments from the July 31, 2023 meeting.
Sooner Conservatives Action LLC, which appears to be operating as dark money, has a website with no links, an address that comes back to a Nichols Hills packaging store, and a phone number listed that immediately goes to voicemail.
Meadows, who assumed office in June 2023, explained his position. He noted that while he could speak with the two other commissioners before his election, the Open Meetings Act now limits such interactions because two commissioners constitute a quorum. According to the law, any discussions between a quorum must be publicly notified, complicating private discussions even for routine matters.
The commissioner stated he would like to speak with his counterparts (District 3 Commissioner Monty Piearcy and District 1 Commissioner Mark Sharpton) with over 30 years of combined experience as a commissioner.
Meadows, one of three candidates in the June 18 election, clarified his stance at Monday’s BOCC meeting during the open comments section, responding directly to the accusations in the flyer.
“It’s been a desire of mine to see us (commissioners) exempt from that. I don’t want to take away any of the safeguards,” Meadows stated. “Things need to be posted. I think our discussion needs to be in public. Our votes need to be in public. I’m not interested in doing anything secret in the backs of our people.”
He emphasized that his opposition to certain aspects of the Open Meetings Act was misunderstood. “There are some people who felt like my opposition to the Open Meetings Act meant that I wanted to shut the public down from being able to attend these meetings and ask questions. That is not at all what the Open Meetings Act is about,” he explained.
Addressing the flyer’s portrayal of him as a liberal, Meadows found humor in the accusation. “I don’t know who did this. My friends have been quite entertained by suggesting that I was a liberal. It’s been a source of a lot of good laughs from a lot of my people, a lot of my friends I’ve known for years that I’m not a liberal,” he said.
Meadows reminds citizens of June as Judeo-Christian Wedding Month
At Monday’s Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting, Commissioner Charlie Meadows took the opportunity to remind Logan County residents that June has been designated as Judeo-Christian Wedding Month by a resolution passed by the Logan County Board of County Commissioners.
“I have always stood up for traditional Judeo-Christian weddings,” Meadows stated, emphasizing his long-standing support for traditional marriage values. Related article: Commissioner Meadows says transgender people “need some help”; calling for a traditional marriage resolution
To underscore his commitment, Meadows wore a t-shirt given to him years ago by Thad Balkman a former state representative and now a judge in Cleveland County. The shirt he proudly displayed at the meeting features an image of a married family on the front and the message, “Remember that marriage is between Adam & Eve and not Adam & Steve,” on the back.
Meadows’ announcement has garnered attention and sparked conversations among the residents of Logan County. While supporters see it as a reaffirmation of the community’s values, others have raised concerns about inclusivity and respect for diverse perspectives on marriage.
