Charter Oak Elementary wins $25,000 grant from State Farm for playground equipment

The votes are in and Charter Oak Elementary School is the winner of a $25,000 grant from State Farm. The funds will go toward the school’s playground equipment.

“Great day for Guthrie,” local State Farm agent Kevin Craft said.

In August, citizens were asked to vote in the State Farm Neighborhood Assist contest in hopes of winning the grant for the outdoor playground equipment. Each person was allowed to vote up to 10 times per day.

The grant was a cooperative effort between Craft, Logan County Health Department Wellness Coordinator, Courtney McLemore and GPS Executive Director of Federal Programs and Elementary Education, Carmen Walters.

The school opened its doors on September 4th and was one of 40 causes to win the challenge, which was announced Tuesday morning.

The school district is expected to reveal additional details soon.

“We are very excited that public/private partnerships such as this exist,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said.

“The process gave the community a way to participate with their diligent voting and our students are the beneficiary. I’m especially grateful to Kevin Craft, Courtney McLemore and Carmen Walters for the work they put into making this happen.”

In total, 4,493,041 votes were cast in the three categories: education, safety and community development.

Community support earned 67.5 percent of the vote as to what inspired people to submit a cause, while 17.5 percent said awareness and 15 percent to inspire others.
