It just came naturally to Shaun Coffman to help someone in trouble, but his immediate response helped save a life on August 15. In return, the Department of the Air Force recognized his heroic action.
Coffman, a Guthrie native, was close by on that August day when he witnessed a roll-over accident. After rolling, the SUV had flipped upside down in a ravine and was quickly filling up with water.
This is when Coffman’s training and expertise from the Coast Guard quickly took over.
Coffman attempted to flip the vehicle onto its side in an effort to capture the person trapped inside. He was able to pull the individual out of the vehicle and immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until emergency crews could respond to the scene.
Coffman, who suffered a hand injury during the event that required several stitches, was recognized with the Department of Air Force Command Civilian Award for Valor and Official Commendation for Courage.
“The single act of compassion for mankind of Mr. Coffman reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force,” Brigadier General Commander Donald Kirkland said.
Mr Evans, I’m sure you’re a wonderful human being, but you need to invest in spell check. I’m pretty sure Shaun didn’t witness a car going into a ‘raven’ because that’s a bird. The word is ravine. No offense, just couldn’t help myself.
