Council approves term limits for city boards, commissions

The Guthrie city council amended changes to the general policy requirements, including term limits, for those who volunteer and serve on city boards and commissions. A process that the council spent several months discussing.

The City of Guthrie has several boards and commissions, including Airport Board, Citizens Rate and Fee Advisory Committee, Board of Adjustment, Convention and Visitor’s Board, Forestry Advisory Board, Historic Preservation Commission, Housing Authority, Library Board, Park Board, Planning Commission and the Guthrie Transportation Authority.

In last week’s council meeting, the council unanimously (6-0) voted, once again, to table the conversation for further discussions in a workshop. However, before the next agenda items, which involved appointing members to boards, the council amended the vote on tabling to re-open the conversation on policy requirements.

After a lengthy (22 minutes) back-and-forth conversation, the council unanimously voted to adopt that a citizen may only serve two full consecutive terms. Board members are approved by the council and serve a three-year term. Current members on boards will be allowed to have two full consecutive terms.

The resolution states all applicants must reside within the corporate city limits for at least a year prior to date of application and must continue to reside within city limits during the time served on the board or commission.

Individuals may not serve on more than two boards or commissions at one time. In addition to the policy, individuals who miss more than four successive meetings are considered voluntarily resigned.

After approving the modifications, the council appointed Lynn Bilodeau to the Historic Preservation Commission, Zachary Colorio, Larry “Van” Cordray II and DeAndre Jones to the Park Board and Carrie Ann Fryar to the Guthrie Housing Authority.

John Wood was the lone council member absent.
