Council recognizes fire department promotions

The 61st Guthrie City Council meeting Tuesday night went as expected. Quickly.

The City Council and Guthrie Public Works Authority needed just 28 minutes to conclude their final meeting in July and the majority of those minutes were taken up with public comments and recognition of three members of the Guthrie Fire Department.

Guthrie Fire Chief Eric Harlow announced Greg Machtolff,  Jason Starns and Ryan Adams all recently earned promotions from within the department. Machtolff was promoted to Battalion Chief, Starns to the rank of Captain and Ryan Adams promoted to Lieutenant. Machtolff fills the vacancy of retired Battalion Chief Shawn Hamill while Starns replaces Machtolff and Adams replaces Starns vacancy.

Each were given their new helmet from Chief Harlow while their wives pinned their new badges to their uniforms in front of friends and family in attendance inside City Hall.

Two citizens wished to speak in public comments. Sam Bennett spoke to the council about his concern and disappointment of the sale of Logan Medical Center. Bennett said he knew the sale was not a city council issue or handled by the City, but wanted a public forum to voice his concerns.

Captain Jason Starns, Battalion Chief Greg Machtolff and Lieutenant Ryan Adams were recognized for their promotions.

Amanda Smith followed in public comments and spoke to the council that she did not approve of a recent ticket she had received.

Following comments, the council voted unanimously in favor of the council workshop held on July 5, the regular council meeting, claims, the Treasurer’s report, reappointed Cheri French to the Guthrie Park Board, approved Arledge & Associates fee of $3,000 for preparation of the 2010 Audit Engagement Letter Addendum and finally approved a grant funded equipment from the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security’s Urban Area Security Initiatives for a Medlite EMS Transportation Skid for the fire department’s Ploaris utility vehicle.

Absent from the meeting was Mayor Chuck Burtcher, councilman John Wood and councilwoman Mary Coffin.

Details of the council approvals were in this original story.
