The Guthrie High School cross country teams were impressive last week as they competed against several Class 6A programs in the Mustang Broncos Harrier Invitational.
The Lady Jays finished third while the Bluejays captured eighth place, but was the top Class 5A program on Thursday.
Guthrie was paced by sophomores Mercy Dement and Tori Wells. Both collected top 10 finishes.
Dement, who won the Guthrie Cottonwood Flats Invitational, crossed the line at the 21:37 mark while Wells came in five seconds later in the 5k race.
Mustang’s Emma Downing took the individual honor with a run of 20:00 and helped her team to the win with 37 points. Jenks finished second with 51 points and followed by Guthrie’s 54 points.
Juniors Ariyanna Wilkins and Allie Guggisberg aided the team score by finishing in the top 20.
Wilkins came in at 22:19 and Guggisberg at 22:33.
Sophomore Sierra Walker finished 27th, junior Denae Davenport 34th and junior Lauryn Downs 51st.
In the boys race, Mustang took the team title with a low score of 29.
Guthrie sophomore Trevor Sallee, winner of the Guthrie Cottonwood Flats Invitational, came across the finish line in fifth place with a time of 17:30 in the 5k race.
Bridge Creek’s Zach Wells was impressive in the win with a time of 16:32.
Senior Rodrigo Solis finished 23rd and was followed up by sophomore Loren Husky (49th), junior Brenden Clutter, sophomore Phoenix Braswell and sophomore Bo Robbins.
Next for Guthrie will be Sept. 9 when the Jays run in the Southwestern Oklahoma State Open in Weatherford.
