Daelon Rice sets school passing record with win in Lawton

Daelon Rice gets the offensive call from his father and offensive coordinator Jason Rice.

Guthrie junior quarterback Daelon Rice etched his name into the Bluejay record books Friday night by throwing six touchdown passes, all coming in the first half, as Guthrie cruised to a 65-20 victory over Lawton inside Cameron Stadium.

The win, combined with Carl Albert’s victory over Altus, secures Guthrie a first-round home playoff game this Friday night. The Bluejays, now 8-2, will host Bishop McGuinness (9-1), who dropped their regular-season finale at home against Lawton MacArthur.

After being forced into a three-and-out on their opening drive, Guthrie’s offense erupted in a variety of ways, piling up 58 first-half points and leaving no doubt by halftime.

Rice connected with five different receivers for his six scoring passes.

Senior Maddox Vaughan hauled in touchdowns of 20 and 68 yards. Senior Owen Wilder broke free for a 43-yard score, while Whitehorn turned a short pass into a 50-yard touchdown. Senior Jace Rainwater made a highlight catch in traffic for a 34-yard score, and senior Amare Watson capped the record-setting half with a diving grab in the end zone from 32 yards out.

The Bluejays also found the end zone on the ground with two rushing touchdowns — an 89-yard run by Zane Thomas and a 3-yard plunge by Elijah Smith, both seniors.

Special teams added points when Lawton failed to field a kickoff, resulting in a safety for Guthrie.

The defense joined the scoring as senior Kellen Hirzel intercepted a pass and returned it seven yards for a touchdown, marking Guthrie’s only score of the second half.

With momentum on their side and a home playoff game ahead, the Bluejays will now prepare for a postseason matchup that promises to be one of the most anticipated games of the year.
