Dane Jenkins finishes runner-up in Edmond; Jays take 5th

Dane Jenkins was the lone Bluejay to qualify for the finals in the Deer Creek High School Invitational, but the Guthrie wrestling team was able to finish fifth out of 11 teams.

With teams from Oklahoma and Kansas, the Jays finished with 177 points with Campus, KS taking the overall title with 411 points in the two day tournament. Piedmont (371) and Deer Creek (354) took second and third, respectively.

In the 220 pound division, Jenkins, a state qualifier a year ago, started the tourney with a fall over Piedmont’s Joseph Mason, but dropped a decision to Hinton’s Ty Weathers in the second round. After a third round bye, Jenkins pinned a Kansas wrestler in the quarterfinals before pinning Griff Stanley of Deer Creek to advance to the championship match.

In the final match, Jenkins was paired up with Weathers once again. In another tough match, Weathers held off for a sudden victory win.

In 132 pounds, Jays’ Kurgan Cornwell finished third with five straight wins after dropping his first round match. Cornwell, a state qualifier, finished with six wins, including a major decision (16-5) over Yukon’s Angelo Wythe in the third place match.

Guthrie’s Colby Graves, wrestling at 152 pounds, cruised through the first six rounds with two byes, three decisions and a fall. Following a semifinal loss, Graves defeated a Deer Creek (7-1 decision) and Hinton opponent (fall) to capture third place.

JB Simpson for the Bluejays won seven of eight matches to capture the third place prize in the heavyweight division. Simpson won in the first five rounds before dropping his quarterfinal match, but finished strong with three straight wins, including two falls.

In other action, Cayden Nelson finished seventh place in the 113 pound division, including a pin over Lawton Eisnehower’s Joshua Saldana in his final match.

Nelson’s brother, Caleb Nelson, finshed fourth overall in the 120 pound weight class with five wins.
