Davis a Star on and off the floor

The Oklahoma City University women’s basketball program concluded their season with an impressive 27-4 record this season. The Stars finished the season as NAIA Tournament quarterfinalists and ranked fourth in the nation in the final regular-season polls.

Emily Davis and the OCU Stars made another appearance in the NAIA Tournament.

Helping with those 27 wins was Guthrie’s Emily Davis, a 2008 GHS graduate who just finished her third season with the Stars. Not only a key component in the wins, but Davis was instrumental off the floor in the classroom and the NAIA recognized her for her efforts.

Davis, one of two team captains, was named as an NAIA scholar-athlete for OCU. Davis maintains a 3.55 grade point average in her studies in early childhood education. The future kindergarten teacher contributes heavily to the success of the Stars.

On the court, Davis added 3.5 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists a night while hitting 40.7 percent of her shots from the field. Davis improved in each category from a season ago.

“Emily Davis is the epitome of a student-athlete,” head coach Joe Edmisson told the school;s website. “Not only is she a good basketball player and has a passion for basketball, but she takes responsibility and just as much pride in her academics. Those are the kind of kids that you love to have in your program that not only know the value of their education but basketball. She’ll be successful in life because of that approach.”

Davis was the key ingredient in the Lady Jays regional championship during the 2007-2008 season. During that season she Averaged 15.9 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals per game, and was honored with Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association all-state and named to the Oklahoman first-team Class 5A all-state.
