Dement, Sallee with Cottonwood Flats Invitational

Babe Ruth called his shot in 1932. Mercy Dement called her shot in 2017 at the annual Guthrie Cottonwood Flats Invitational.

Several minutes before the varsity race, Dement said she was gong to win it. Turns out, she was right.

Dement ran the two-mile race in 13:07.50 and right behind her was Guthrie’s Tori Wells, Aryianna Wilkins and Sierra Warner. Wells crossed at the 13:18 mark, Wilkins at 13:28 and Warner at 13:45.

The Lady Jays cruised to victory in the Class 5A race with a team low 17 points.

Also finishing in the top 10 for Guthrie was Allie Guggisberg with a seventh place finish.

Denae Davenport came in 13th place and Lauryn Downs was 17th.

Meanwhile, Trevor Sallee breezed through the competition to win the top medal in the boys’ varsity run by 29 seconds.

Sallee, who is among the best in the state, ran the race in 10:45.72.

The next runner to cross was Guthrie’s Rodrigo Solis with a time of 11:14.

Western Heights, however, was able to come away with the team victory (46-45) with three runners in the top 10.

The Bluejays got good runs from Brendan Clutter, Andrew Rowley and Evan Flury.

Loren Huskey finished 11th while first year runner Bo Robbins came in next in 12:14.
