OKLAHOMA CITY – Devon Energy selected Guthrie’s FFA chapter to receive a $1,000 grant for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.
With the funds, the Guthrie FFA chapter will create an aquaponics growing system to promote agriscience research projects. The chapter will combine grant money with other funding sources to purchase a greenhouse and other equipment. The greenhouse will serve as a teaching laboratory for students to learn about aquaculture and vegetable production.
“We’re excited to further develop the horticulture aspect of the agricultural education program,” said Guthrie FFA Advisor Kaitlyn Williams. “Devon’s grant helps us implement knowledge in a hands-on way, which helps to prepare students for careers in agriculture.”
Devon started the new grant to increase students’ access to innovative technologies being used in the agriculture industry and provide firsthand learning opportunities.
“Having resources to experiment and gain real-world experience fosters student ingenuity and creativity,” said Christina Rehkop, Devon manager of community affairs. “Devon proudly supports STEM-based education and looks forward to seeing the new FFA programs positively impact our state’s children.”
Other chapters that received grant money include Harrah in conjunction with Choctaw; Stillwater; Central High in conjunction with Marlow; and Hennessey.
