Double up and lets go to STATE

For the second year in a row, the Powell’s are headed back to the State Tennis Tournament and two more Lady Jays will be going for the first time after qualifying in the 5A regional.

The Guthrie No. 1 doubles team of Brooke Powell and Paige Powell along with Sarah Howells and Taylar Swartzbaugh, in No. 2 doubles, each placed fourth and will take on the elite state field starting at 8am, on Friday morning, at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

In the first round, the Powell’s defeated El Reno 6-3, 6-1.  In the second round they played Carl Albert, who was the two seed and took them to three sets.

However, they lost the first set 0-6, came from behind in the second set to win it 7-5 before dropping the last set 6-1.

Having to win the next round to qualify for state, they did exactly that by soundly beating Deer Creek 6-1, 6-2.  In the third place match they lost to Bishop Kelley 6-0, 6-2.

A season ago playing No. 2 doubles at State, the Powell duo dropped a first round match to Shawnee before rallying to get a second round win over Grove, and then falling to Carl Albert in the last round.

For Howells and Swartbaugh in the first round, they defeated Deer Creek 6-1, 6-4.  In the second round they lost to the #1 seed McGuinness 6-0, 6-0.

The next round, much like the Powell girls, they had to win to qualify for state and did so by taking down El Reno 6-2, 6-3.  In the last round they played Bishop Kelley and much like the Powell girls lost to the Comets, 6-2, 6-3.

Krysten Reed played No. 2 singles all year and had to play No. 1 singles because Shawnee Smith was not able to play.

“Krysten played really hard but did not quality for state,” head coach Mary Hudson said.
