The scenario could have been much worse late Sunday afternoon after a tenant found a downtown building filled with smoke.
Right at 5 p.m. Traci Hayes was working in her second floor office when she began to smell smoke inside the Kress Building located at 107 E. Oklahoma.
“I hadn’t been in my office space but an hour and smelled smoke,” Hayes told Guthrie News Page.
Hayes says she opened the door to the hallway to make her way out while battling the smoke-filled building and was able to call 911.
Guthrie Fire Chief Eric Harlow says the fire appears to have been a possible electrical fire inside the Department of Corrections, Logan County Probation and Parole Office.
The cause was fire remains under investigation.
Luckily, the fire snuffed itself out before being able to spread any further.
OG&E turned the power off to the parole and probation office, but was able to keep power to the other businesses.
Chief Harlow said the other offices inside the building and next door suffered smoke damage.
There were no injuries reported.
The Guthrie Fire Department was assisted by the Sooner Volunteer Fire Department and Oak Cliff Fire Department.
