DPS: Fatality report for the month of January

Department of Public Safety officials report a decrease in traffic fatalities.  There were 31 fatalities in January  2013 compared to 44 in the same month last year.

During the month of January there was one motorcyclist and five pedestrians who died in traffic related crashes. The highest daily fatality numbers include nine deaths on Thursdays, dropping to seven on Saturdays. There were 11 days in the month of January the Department of Public Safety
reported no fatalities.

Three of the fatality crashes were alcohol-related. Twenty-three of the fatality victims were Oklahoma residents and  eight nonresidents. There were 20 male and 11 female victims.

There were no fatality victims under the age of 20. The 21 – 30 year-old age group led the fatality count with eight.

Oklahoma County led the state with a fatality count of six, followed by Payne County with four fatalities.

The highest number of fatalities occurred on US Highways and County Roads with eight fatalities.

Fifty-two percent of those who died in traffic collisions were not wearing safety belts at the time of the crash.
