Driver attempts to elude police officer; car goes airborne in city streets

A Guthrie man to try to speed away from a Guthrie police officer and afterwards attempted to out-run officers after wrecking a vehicle.

The event took place on June 30 when a Guthrie police officer first noticed a cracked windshield on a 2004 Dodge Neon with an expired license tag of Nov. 2014.

According to a police report, the officer attempted to pull the vehicle over near the intersection of Perkins Ave. and Broad St., but the vehicle continued on. The car came to a stop sign at Division St., but then accelerated at an increased speed across the busy city street.

With emergency lights flashing and sirens, the Dodge went airborne after hitting a dip in the road near 1st Street. The vehicle continued west on Perkins Ave. and again went airborne with another dip in the road at 2nd Street. The second impact caused the door to ajar and almost ejecting the driver, according to the officer.

The pursuit continued.

The driver approached 3rd Street and turned east into a large group of trees. From there, a black male took off on foot through a field. A trooper with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the Guthrie police officer was able to take the subject into custody following the foot pursuit.

Kenneth Jerome Knight, 58, was booked into the city jail.

He faces four charges, including eluding a police officer, driving under revocation (license revoked), failure to carry security verification and operating a vehicle with due taxes.

Knight pleaded not guilty and was given a $2,500 bond. He was appointed a court attorney and is expected back in court on Thursday.
