In an emotional regional baseball game at Squires Field the Duncan Demons outlasted the Guthrie BlueJays in a roller coaster of a game to stay unbeaten in the Guthrie Regional.
The top seeded Jays rallied from a 5-run deficit after two innings before tying the game at 5-5 and eventually taking a 15-8 lead to see it disappear as Duncan pulled out a 17-16 nine inning game.
Guthrie then turned around and easily handled Classen with a 22-1 win to eliminate Classen. The Jays must now win both games today against Duncan to advance to next week’s state tournament in the Tulsa area.
Game 6 is set for 4:00 and a BlueJay win would force a Game 7 at 6:30.
“There was lots of tension in the stands and on the field,” Duncan coach Darren Briggs told the Duncan Banner. “It was just a tremendous ball game and we’re fortunate to get the win.”
The Demons popped two homers in the second inning and led 5-0, but senior Jaden Chappell got the Jays on the board with a 2-out double and the Jays were on a run of 9 unanswered runs.
Highlighting the on slaught of runs was Chappell adding a 3-run homer and John Cotton adding a shot of his own. Luke Davis finished the day with four hits as eight different Jays scored on the afternoon.
In the Jays fifth inning, sophomore Hayden Seifert crushed a pitch off the wall and then scored on fellow sophomore Landry Chappell’s triple to give Guthrie a 16-13 advantage through five innings.
Duncan tied the game at 16-all with yet another home run in the sixth. Both teams were unable to score runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Senior Dustin Bowman led the top of the eighth off with a single, but was doubled up when senior Corbin Crockett absolutely smashed a line drive right to the first baseman who then stepped on his base for the double play and leaving the Jays without any runs.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Duncan got a 1-out double off the left centerfield wall and the runner eventually got the third with just one out. The next two ground balls were hit to Jaden Chappell and on the third out made a game saving play with a great play to his left.
Guthrie got a base hit from freshmen Bryan Dutton in their half of the 9th, but were unable to bring him home.
Duncan in their final at bat got a single and the next Demon hitter sent a shot to center field where Bowman laid out and made an outstanding catch, and in the process the Demon base runner had gone to far off first base, but the Jays were unable to secure the out.
Duncan then drew a base on ball and scored the winning run on a bouncer that just went under the glove to score the winning run.
