Update at 8:30 pm Monday, June 22 – The earthquake at 5:16 has been downgraded to a 3.8 by the USGS.
Residents in Logan County are on edge as they expect more tremors to hit the county. So far, three quakes have registered 3.3 or higher on Monday and several smaller quakes that have not registered. The series of quakes follows eight quakes in the early morning hours on Saturday.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the largest quake at 5:16 p.m. on Monday with a 4.1 magnitude. At 2:47 p.m., a 3.3 struck and at 4:06 p.m. a 3.7 was felt. The largest quake was felt throughout the Oklahoma City area.
Several hit social media sites claiming the quakes felt a lot larger than what’s being reported by the USGS.
All three quakes centered around E. Charter Oak Road in the southern portion of the county.
The 4.1 and 3.4 were south of the road and east of Midwest Blvd. The 3.7 tremor was north of Charter Oak near Pine St.
Late Friday and early morning Saturday, eight quakes struck Logan County with seven in the southern portion of the county. Related story: Two additional earthquakes push overnight total to eight
State Rep. Jason Murphey (R-Guthrie) shared in his weekly column, “this weekend’s earthquake swarms have taken a tremendous psychological toll on area residents. I know this from reading the emails and texts which started just seconds after the first large quake and have continued until right now.”
“Please know that state officials will be working hard this week to determine correlations and I will request and share this information with you as I am able. Much has happened since we invited state officials to speak to us at a town hall meeting last June. Perhaps it is time for us to ask them to return for another town hall.”
A Guthrie News Page viewer thanked Murphey for his work on the issue with legislators, but says enough is enough.
“I commend you on your continued efforts on the earthquake issue. However, we are past town hall meetings. We want action. I’m to the point of engaging in civil disobedience if necessary.”
That town hall meeting was a damn joke! “Oh, we need more data, oh we are requesting measurements, oh we have a stoplight system in place.” Put a stop sign in place and I bet u see a difference. Then figure out how to go back to doing it when it wasn’t causing earthquakes. I’m not against oil and gas, I’m against the damage being caused and nobody having the backbone to own up to it! You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure this crap out, plain and simple!
I’m afraid for my family. Our home is collapsing. What are we looking at in the future and what kind of time frame? They are getting worse more frequent and stronger. Even our 6 yrs old is having nightmares. This is terrifying.
I like some of you initially defended the oil and gas industry because I have family members in the business. However, the reality is every time they sink a well near my home ( and I’m by the lake and there have been a few) the quakes get worse. My house is being shaken apart. My dogs need are on the verge of needing Xanax. They cannot be allowed to drill in certain areas of the state and central Oklahoma is one of them because of the way the fault lined lay. That’s my two cents.
