Former school employee sentenced in embezzlement case

A former Guthrie Public Schools employee was sentenced last week after pleading guilty to an embezzlement charge. The case stemmed from a payroll audit revealing unauthorized payments totaling approximately $8,300.

Linda Sue Campbell, 41, of McLoud, served as the district’s payroll overseer for two years. A routine payroll audit conducted in January uncovered discrepancies in her paycheck, beginning in December 2022 and continuing through October 2023.

Most of the misappropriated funds appeared as $640.28 monthly overpayments, but a significant deposit of $4,481.96 was identified in October.

Court documents show that Campbell admitted to the embezzlement during multiple discussions with school officials, citing financial hardships faced by her family as the reason for her actions. She resigned from her position on November 15, 2023.

A Logan County judge accepted Campbell’s blind plea and sentenced her to five years of probation, with the condition that she serve 15 weekends in the Logan County Jail beginning last week. The sentence followed restitution made by Campbell, covering the amount embezzled.
