Both the 7th and 9th grade Guthrie football teams improved to 2-0 on the season Monday. The 8th grade team tried to join them, but fell short.
The freshmen squad got a nice performance from quarterback Reed Roberts, who passed for two scores while rushing for one.
“I felt good out there tonight,” Roberts said after his teams 35-0 shut-out over Western Heights. “It’s always good to get a win.”
Playing their first home game of the season, the freshmen had six different players score in the end zone. Their first score came quick in the opening quarter when Roberts found Donavan Jordan for a 35-yard score.
Adrian Smith was the next Jay to score when he took off on a 60-yard cross-country run for pay dirt.
The Guthrie defense got in the scoring fun with a 2-point safety, but the offense got back to work when Roberts ran in a 10-yard option play.
Khalil Moore took advantage of an opening by the offensive line and took off for a 30-yard score. The Jays finalized the scoring when Roberts found Jacob Chappell with just :08 left before the half. The 28-yard score finalized the scoring as neither team found the end zone in the second half.
Guthrie finished the night by going 3-for-5 on point after attempts.
“It felt good to get the win,” head coach Jon Chappell said. “The defense played extremely well, and on offense we threw the ball well.”
7th Grade gets second win
Head coach Jason Rice could tell his players were more confident in their second game of the season as the jitters seemed to have left in the first game. The Jays got a tough road win, in Shawnee, with an 18-6 win.”The kids came out and played hard.” Rice said. “They executed well on offense and the defense was phenomenal. The offense was a lot better tonight than Thursday, and the defense allowed one scored when we over pursued, but give credit to their runner.” Highlighting the offense was Kevin Blue on a long touchdown score.
8th grade is doubled up
The 8th grade Jays dropped their first game of the season with a 28-14 setback to the Wolves. The Jays were to open the season in Shawnee, but construction delayed the game for 11 days.
Both the 7th and 8th grade teams will return to the gridiron, on Thursday, when they travel to Western Heights.
