The freshmen and junior varsity football teams made a clean sweep of the Enid Plainsmen with two more wins on Monday evening inside Jelsma Stadium.

GuthrieThe games were the first for both teams at home. The frosh scored the game’s first two scores, but found themselves down 14-12 before scoring 14 unanswered points for a 26-12 win. Meanwhile, the junior varsity controlled the entire game en route to a 20-6 win.

The freshmen Jays struck first in the opening quarter after Ty Doolin gave them great field position with a 30-yard punt return to the Enid 27-yard line. On the eighth play of the drive,

Running back Cal Davis sneaked in from 2-yards out for a 6-0 lead. Early in the second quarter, Doolin scored on a 15-yard run that was nicely set up with a 22-yard pass and catch between quarterback Dalton Graybeal and Davis.

The Jays led 12-0 with over eight minutes left in the half.

Enid, however, found the end zone just before the half with a 4-yard toss run to cut the lead 12-6.

Guthrie appeared they were about to increase their lead, but a fumble at the 1-yard line erased what was a nice drive of 10 plays. The defense held strong and forced the Plainsmen to a 3-and-out.

Following an interception, Enid took their lone lead, 14-12, when the Plainsmen running back took off for a 73-yard score on the first play of the drive. The score came with 6:57 left in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Zac Payne gave the freshmen a boost with a 33-yard kick return and was rewarded less than two minutes later as he came down with a 14-yard scoring catch. Afterwards, Breyden Codding hauled in the two-point conversion catch to give Guthrie a 20-14 advantage.

Guthrie sealed the deal late in the fourth quarter with the game still in the balance. Head coach Jon Chappell went to his bag of tricks on a third down and eight play.

After spending time-outs to stop the clock, Enid prepared for another running play and turns out they were correct until Davis stopped in his track and released the ball to a wide open Codding for a 23-yard gain on the half back pass.

Graybeal put the final touch on the game when he scored from 23-yards out with less than two minutes to play.

The freshmen are now 1-1 on the season with a 14-8 loss in their season opener at Ponca City.
