Freshmen football off to 3-0 start; shut-out Irish

The junior varsity football team had the week off due to McGuinness unable to fill a team on Monday due to injuries, but the freshmen squad took the field and looked good doing so.

The Jays traveled to McGuinness and shut-out the Irish 34-0 to remain unbeaten on the season at 3-0.

The freshmen jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead.

Dominic Goosby was the first Bluejay to hit pay dirt with a 26 yard touchdown reception from quarterback Jackson Waddell. On the two-point attempt, Waddell found Marcellous Owens to go up 8-0.

Next, it was the defense’s turn as CJ Ward picked up an Irish fumble and returned it the other way for a 70-yard touchdown score to increase the lead to 14-0.

The Waddell-Owens show continued when Waddell hit Owens for a 60-yard score. Zeb Robbins connected on the point after and the Jays led 21-0.

The trio returned in the second half to put more points on the board.

This time it was Waddell finding Owens for a 31-yard pass and catch and Robbins tacking on the extra point to take away any possible Irish come back ideas.

The Jays defense proved to be stellar with not only keeping the Irish off the board, but adding two interceptions with Caleb Nelson and Khris Gizzard each accounting for the picks.

Blake Curtin finished with a team high 14 tackles.
