It was the final home regular season game for the 9th grade BlueJay football squad and it was a hard-fought win to the final minute of the game against rival Carl Albert.

Donavan Jordan leaps over a defender for the ball. Guthrie held on for a 34-33 win.

The Jays jumped out to a 13-0 lead and held on for a 34-33 win and improve to 5-2 this season. With 67 points scored between the schools, it was a defensive stand that made the difference in the win for Guthrie.

Guthrie led 26-21 at the half, but the Titans took their first lead of the night, 27-26, with 7:52 to play in the third quarter and were threatening to go up by two scores. CA had several opportunities inside the 10-yard line and then several more inside the 5-yard line, but could not navigate past the goal line.

Needing a score to take the lead back, the Jays went back to their bread and butter play. Reed Roberts to Donavan Jordan.

Roberts took the shot-gun snap, avoided two Titan rushers and threw on the run to Jordan, who came back to the ball to make the catch and get in the end zone. Guthrie then went for the two-point and Roberts found Bailey Nichols for the conversion to give the lead back to the Jays, 34-27, with 7:08 to play in the game.

Jordan finished with three touchdown receptions while Roberts finished with four touchdown passes and a 1-yard rushing score. Roberts other passing score found Jeremy Brown on a 32-yard score in the Southwest corner of the end zone just before the half.

However, the CA quarterback and defensive back scored all five scores for his team, including 80, 68, and 60-yard runs to go with a pick six.

The last Titan score pushed the Jays lead down to one, 34-33, with 5:35 left and got the ball back on a Guthrie turnover at midfield with 2:51 left to play. CA was not able to move the ball by going four-and-out and the Jays simply ran the clock out to secure the win.

Head coach Jon Chappell’s team will finish the regular season, next Monday, when they travel to El Reno before finishing the season at Super Saturday.
