Last Friday the Western Heights Jets football program pulled off perhaps the biggest upset in the school’s history and easily in Class 5A this season. The Jets went to Edmond and gave Deer Creek a 26-23 Homecoming setback. Now, the Jays will look to stop that momentum.
The game can be heard on Triple Play Sports Radio 105.1 FM., streamed world-wide on both Guthrie Sports Page and Guthrie News Page websites along with the Tunein radio app. The pregame show begins at 6:30 p.m. with the kick at 7:00.
Both teams enter with identical 2-1 district 5A-2 records. Overall, Western Heights has registered a 4-2 record and the Bluejays at 3-2. The Jets picked up wins over U.S. Grant, Capitol Hill, Southeast and Deer Creek. Their two losses came from the hands of El Reno (31-26) and Carl Albert (54-12).
The Jets leaned on the legs and arm of senior quarterback Kevin Rassatt, including in the win over Deer Creek. Last week, Rassatt led the Jets on a 93-yard drive and scored a touchdown from 3-yards out with no time left on the clock. The playmaker compiled 289 passing yards on 22 of 28 passing and added 147 rushing yards and three scores.
Through six games, Rassatt has rushed for 1,264 yards and thrown for 988 with 25 total touchdowns. A season ago, he was catching passes and did that well by hauling 39 receptions for 649 yards. He added 637 rushing yards on 54 carries.
The Guthrie defense will have the job of containing Rassatt, who did not play in the game with the Jays in 2014. The Bluejays have allowed only five yards rushing in their last two wins over Piedmont and Guymon.
The Jays have dominated the series since 2001 with an 8-0 record and by a margin of 52.7 to 4.2. Guthrie has held the Jets to six points in the last five seasons, including four shut-outs.
