GERA receives $1,150 grant to help students learn to fly

The Guthrie Edmond Regional Airport was selected to receive the 2021 Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission (OAC) Aviation & Aerospace Education grant in the amount of $1,150.

The program was one of 38 entities to receive the grant.

The commission is determined to focus on vectoring young minds towards the exploration of aviation and aerospace through their nationally recognized and award winning education grant program.

Despite not being able to hold the aviation program in 2020 due to Coronavirus, Airport Director Schellon Stanley is looking forward to next year.

“Our Summer Aviation Program is a one-day program consisting of 20 students learning the principles of flight with various hands-on activities,” Stanley said.

“After the one-day program, a great bunch of volunteer pilots with the EAA Young Eagles, come the next day to give all the students who went through the program  a ride in an airplane for free. Unfortunately we were unable to have our program this year but are excited to get back to normal in 2021.”

In order for a program to qualify for an aviation education grant or contract, it must meet certain requirements. Most importantly, the program must demonstrate that its curriculum and goals are geared toward aviation and aerospace.
