GHS basketball teams start season with .500 records

The Oklahoma high school basketball season is underway, and the Guthrie hoops programs returned from Woodward with two tournament wins.

First-year head coach Breck Clark and the Lady Jays are 2-2 after starting the season 0-2. For the Bluejays, Sean Morgan is now in his fourth season as the head coach.

Morgan and the Jays dropped the season opener in Lawton with a 73-65 setback to the MacArthur Highlanders. On the same night, MacArthur handed the Lady Jays a lopsided 76-32 loss.

However, both teams got going last week in Woodward with two wins each in three tournament games.

The Lady Jays dropped their first game to Class 5A Glenpool, 61-52, but got the first program win for Clark with a 41-32 win over Lawton Eisenhower.

On the next day, Guthrie defeated Altus, 71-45, for their second straight win to claim the consolation finals title.

For the boys, they took third place with wins convincing wins over Altus, 86-51, and Glenpool, 73-41. The lone loss came to Class 5A Nathan Hale, 54-42.

Senior guard Jaylen Chelf was named to the All-Tournament team for his performances.

Guthrie will host Class 6A Northwest Classen for the first home game of the season on Tuesday. The girls’ action begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed up by the boy’s action.

The Jays will not be back inside their gymnasium until Jan. 24.
