GHS, GJHS teams off to good start to the season

The first two weeks of March were a busy time for the Guthrie High School and Junior High School tennis teams.

The Guthrie varsity girls began the season at the Carl Albert Tournament with Holly and Aspen Mitchell playing No. 2 doubles and placing 6th, Jillian Minter playing No. 1 doubles with Rylee Tobin and placed fourth, Emma Poupard placing fifth at No. 1 singles and Kenzie Hardesty placed 14th at No. 2 singles.

At Ponca City, Lola Brown and Haven Hudson placed second at No. 1 doubles at the first qualifier of the year. They defeated Edmond Summit, Bartlesville, and Edmond North before losing to Stillwater in the finals.

Teagan Duehning and Lania Woodard placed fourth at No. 2 doubles. They were unseeded and won their first two rounds before losing to Stillwater in the semifinals and to Bartlesville for 3rd.

In No. 1 doubles, Lane Goode and his partner Mason Mayer placed sixth at the Carl Albert Tournament.

Jaxson Mayer placed 14th at No. 2 singles Carson Olmsted placed eighth at No. 1 singles. Mason Mayer and Lane Goode placed sixth, and Gavin Cook and Alx Varselona placed eighth at No. 2 doubles.

In Ada, the boys only got in one round before they were rained out. Emma Poupard placed fourth at No. 1 singles, losing to Ada in a tiebreaker for third, Aspen and Hollie Mitchell placed seventh, defeating Seminole in their last match.

Jillian Minter and Rylee Tobin placed fifth, their only loss was to Norman North who won the tournament at No. 1 doubles. After defeating Harrah, they played Norman North and that is the round they lost. The next round was Casady who was up 3-0 in the second set and Jillian and Rylee came back to win the set and the tiebreaker. For the fifth-place match, they came from behind in the first set to beat Carl Albert 7-5 and in the second set, they skunked them beating them 6-0.

Kenzie Hardesty playing No. 2 singles won her first round against Ardmore to get herself on the right side of the bracket but ended up placing eight.

“We are so proud of her improvement,” head coach Mary Hudson said.

Guthrie Junior High competed well at the Carl Albert Tournament. Haven Hudson placed fourth at No. 1 singles, Lola Brown placed second at No. 2 singles, Teagan Duehning and Lania Woodard placed sixth at No. 1 doubles and Kinley Nelson and Taylor Shipley placed fourth at No. 2 doubles. Drake Shelton placed seventh at No. 1 singles, Ryan Mostram placed eighth at No. 2 singles, Trenton Edberg and Caden Shipley placed seventh at No. 1 doubles and Nash Huskey and Brennon Williams placed eighth at No. 2 doubles!

At the Duncan Tennis Tournament, the varsity Bluejays No. 2 doubles team of Gavin Cook and Isaiah Dearman placed fourth. Carson Olmsted placed fifth at No. 1 singles, Jaxson Mayer placed 10th at No. 2 singles and Mason Mayer and Lane Goode placed fifth at No. 1 doubles.

Rylee Tobin and Jillian Minter had a great day at the Duncan Tennis Tournament held at the OKC Tennis Center. They placed second losing to Carl Albert in the finals.
