Girl State participant talks to Guthrie Noon Lions Club

At a recent Guthrie Noon Lions Club meeting Megan Jack shared her experiences while attending the American Legion’s Girls State Program this past summer. Megan, the daughter of Carla and Daniel Jack of Edmond, also related some of her experiences while a member of the Junior ROTC program at Edmond North High School.

Jack noted that almost 500 young ladies attended the Girls State Program this summer in Norman. She reflected, “It was a wonderful experience. We had the opportunity to hear the Governor and the Lt. Governor speak on many critical issues of our times. I had the unique experience of running for Mayor of one of the fictitious cities in “the State”. It was an outstanding experience of planning and executing a campaign. And I won!! But the most significant outcome from the Girls State experience was the relationship building. During the program I was able to make some friendships with girls from all over the state; relationships which I am sure will last a long time!”

Jack also related experiences she has had an Operations Commander and Flight Commander in her Junior ROTC program. She is hopeful that this experience will serve as a spring board to an appointment to one of the military academies.

“I would be honored to be selected for any of the military academies, but the Naval Academy is my first choice. I would love to become an officer in the United States Marine Corps with a focus on Intel or Navy Surface Warfare.”

Bill Wagoner, American Legion LeBron Post 58 Girl State/Boys State Coordinator, also shared with the Club the planning and selection process for applicants from Guthrie and Logan County. Wagoner noted that this year the LeBron Post sponsored 10 boys and seven girls from Logan County high schools to these programs.

“It costs quite a bit to sponsor these students, but we feel it is a very positive investment in the future leadership of our communities and county.”  For additional information concerning Boys State and Girls State programs please contact the American Legion Post at 282-2589.

The Guthrie Noon Lions Club meets every Friday at noon at the First United Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall on Noble. Each week, in addition to a wonderful meal and meaningful fellowship, a special guest presentation is made, generally focusing on a program, process or activity that directly affects our community and our lives.

Membership Chair, Lion Sylvia Ochs, added, “Lions are women and men who want to make a positive impact on their community. Membership is open to all who want to make a difference, to all who want ‘to serve’. Join us and help make that motto happen again in 2014.”
