Plans beginning to start for swimming pool, water park in Highland Park

The first part of the City of Guthrie’s Capital Improvements Projects is beginning to move forward with proposed future improvements to the swimming pool at Highland Park and the addition of a water park facility.

Guthrie City Manager Bruce Johnson made a presentation to the Park Board last week and is expected to inform the city council on the future plans at the next council meeting on Tuesday.

Johnson’s presentation to the Park Board outlined his vision and ideas for the swimming pool and water park facility for the citizens of Guthrie. Johnson, former Grove city manager, helped the City of Grove in orchestrating their swimming pool facility approximately eight years ago.

Johnson says $2.2 million has been reserved for the pool project, which will be funded from the three-quarters sales tax that was passed by citizens in February. Related article: Voters say YES for City’s Capital Improvement Plan

Johnson is hopeful part of the improvements on the current pool, includes creating a lap pool, adding diving boards and Health Department-compliant modifications.

In the addition to the pool, Johnson visions a separate water park to the north of the pool. The water park would include play and activity structures, age-appropriate play areas and a few types of slides.

With the proposed addition of the water park, the existing shelter (pavilion) and basketball court would need to be relocated to another area of the park. In addition, the current empty building in the park, which houses park maintenance equipment and other materials, would need to be rehabilitated.

Johnson told the Park Board once the plans were developed, the City staff would bring them back to the board for review. Final plans for the facilities will be presented to the City Council prior to proceeding with the project.

The goal is to complete the design within the next six months, with construction to follow and opening in 2018.

Johnson said the outer façade of the buildings associated with the pool would be in sandstone-like material that would match with the park.
