Law enforcement is on the look out for a man who held his girlfriend hostage at gunpoint, assaulted and stole her items.
On Sunday evening, the Crescent Police Department responded to a convenience store in the 700 block of S. Grand for a report of a physical domestic with a weapon.
Lt. Andy Stephens said Devonte Smotherman held his girlfriend hostage with a Beretta pistol, threatened her with the weapon, strangled and battered her and robbed her of her phone, wallet and keys.
It’s reported Smotherman made statements to his girlfriend that he was not going back to prison and if he was contacted by police that he was not going down without a fight and would force police to shoot him.
Several attempts were made by the Crescent Police Department to draw Smotherman out of the residence, but never exited the residence. It was believed that he had barricaded himself inside the residence.
The Crescent Police Department requested Logan County Swat Team to respond for assistance.
“We have received many reports of gunshots during this time. There were no gunshots fired during this incident. The noise that was heard was CS gas canisters (commonly referred to as tear gas) being fired into the residence,” Stephens said.
Stephens says they believe Smotherman fled the scene prior to their arrival and was picked up in a newer model white Chevrolet Camaro SS.
He is believed to be in the Midwest city area.
