Friday night at Guthrie High School’s graduation ceremony there were several rounds of cheering, but collecting the two loudest ovations was for Tiffany Youngblood.
As the graduates were making their way into Jelsma Stadium, a group of GHS football players (wearing their special occasion black football jerseys) were seen at the end of the line escorting Youngblood, who is a special needs student and is confined to a wheelchair. The seniors in their royal blue gowns joined the jam-packed stadium crowd with a loud ovation for Youngblood as she entered the stadium.
The GHS band stopped playing the graduating theme song “Pomp Circumstance” before realizing Youngblood hadn’t made it through the line. No worries. They started the song back up and gave Youngblood her own official sendoff of Pomp Circumstance.
The seniors and audience had one more ovation left. After forty minutes of names being introduced, it was Tiffany Youngblood’s turn. Everyone knew it was coming with the collection of football players. As the name – Tiffany Youngblood – was read out loud over the stadium’s speakers, The Rock exploded with cheers as if the Jays scored the game winning touchdown.
The players wheeled Tiffany to her diploma and down the line to be greeted by superintendent, high school principals and teachers.
“We would like to give a special thanks to Lisa Kroth, Pamela Johnson-Fields and Suzannae Ratcliff. They have been with Tiffany for the past eight years,” Tiffany’s stepmother Kayla Perry told Guthrie News Page.
Perry also wanted to give special thanks to Jon Chappell (athletic director), Kelly Beeby (football coach), Bill Perring (vocal director), Michael Harmon (teacher/coach) and the players for helping plan and making it a special night for Tiffany.
“Thank you very much for the wonderful community and schools.”
