Guerrero wins pole vault in a jump off; boys take fourth

The Guthrie boys and girls track team continued their tough schedule to begin the 2011 season with a trip to Edmond Memorial on Friday.

Guthrie’s Erika Guerrero took top honors in the pole vault in a jump off with a height of 10-3 to set a personal best by 9 inches.  Also for the Lady Jays, Ashley Shields  jumped 15-9 in the long jump to finish sixth.

Walker Cross ran his personal best in the 1600 meter run to help

The BlueJays finished fourth overall with a team score of 46 in a field of 6A schools along with Deer Creek. Edmond Memorial (177) and Edmond Santa Fe (132) were one-two and Norman was third (60). Memorial and Santa Fe are the top two ranked teams in 6A.

The 4 x 100 relay team of Alphonzo Wilcots, Devonte Mccully, Chad Nash, and Emmanuel Robinson placed second with a time of 43.53. Edmond was a touch quicker with a 42.38 time.

The 4 x 800 relay team of Hunter Sallee, Walker Cross, Alex Dorio, and Jonathan Ogan ran a 8.25.30 and was good for fourth with Memorial, Santa Fe, and Deer Creek ahead of them.

In the individual races, Robinson was second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.07 with Santa Fe’s runner (Teeters) finishing with a 10.72. Robinson also finished second in the 110 meter hurdle run that featured the best hurdle runners in the state with Edmond Santa Fe’s Gunnar Nixon.

Nixon just edged Robinson by just .30 of a second with a time of 14.24. The third place finisher was a nearly a second behind the elite.

McCully ran an 11.19 in the 100 meter for fourth while Alex Dorio finished fifth in the 400 meter with a time of 52.64.

“Alex Dorio had his best meet ever,” head coach Gary Boxley said. ” He ran 52.64 in the 400 which is a second better than he is ran before  and in the 4×8 he split 2:02 for his leg on the relay  which was a two second improvement. He is a senior and has been improving every meet.”

Hunter Sallee ran his second best time in the 1600 as he was five seconds from his personal best. His running mate Walker Cross ran a 4:46 in the same 1600 meter race and had an improvement of 11 seconds from his best time.
