Guthrie boys basketball team involved in four-vehicle crash, no injuries reported

The Guthrie High School boys varsity basketball team was involved in a four-vehicle crash on Friday while traveling to Weatherford for the second day of the Weatherford Classic.

The crash occurred on Interstate 44 near 23rd Street in Oklahoma City. The bus, which was carrying players and coaches, sustained front-end damage.

No injuries were reported among the student-athletes or coaching staff.

A parent of one of the athletes said, Everyone is safe.

Law enforcement officials did not immediately release an official cause of the crash.

“Obviously, we are incredibly thankful to not have any injuries,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said. “I’ve been in contact with Coach Nathan Pennypacker and appreciate his leadership, along with the rest of our staff, to take care of our students.”

A second bus from Guthrie was dispatched to pick up the team; however, officials later decided to postpone the trip due to the scheduled 4 p.m. tipoff and the delays caused by the incident. The team is expected to resume tournament play on Saturday.
