The Guthrie, Carl Albert winner will be in the captain seat for the Class 5A-1 district championship and perhaps two home playoff games at home. The loser may have to settle for just one home playoff game and a trip to Tulsa for the second round.
Here are how the Jays and Titans made it to identical 6-0 records.
Week 1
Guthrie 36, Duncan 0 – the Jays used the running game at will led by senior Luke Davis. Davis rushed 107 yards on nine carries in the first half alone. He finished the game with 123 yards on 12 touches. The offense managed 290 yards of total offense with 282 of those coming via the running game.
Carl Albert 24, Booker T Washington 3 – It was supposed to be a week one clash, but the Titans quickly took all the drama away by holding the Hornets to a micro 56 yards of offense and forced five turnovers. Carl Albert used 217 rushing yards to separate themselves from the defending state champions.
Week 2
Guthrie 43, Ponca City 7 – The running game proved to be solid again for the team in royal blue and white with 227 yards on 49 attempts, but it was the Jays defense that stood out. The Wildcats passing game was tamed with just 94 yards on 28 passing attempts. The prior week, Ponca aired it out 47 times for 396 yards. In addition, the rushing game was not a factor either with 54 yards on 18 rushes.
Carl Albert 23, Ardmore 20 – The Titans were in another top 10 game with 8th ranked Ardmore. Carl Albert collected a safety in the first quarter and outscored the Tigers by a point in the second quarter that proved to be the difference.
Week 3
Guthrie 34, Enid 0 – The Guthrie defense was once again stellar. Entering the game they allowed just 93.5 yards of offense and held Enid’s pass happy offense to just 117 yards of offense, including 68 yards through the air. In the three non-district games, the BlueJays defense allowed a total of 107 rushing yards (35 average).
Carl Albert 14, Duncan 0 – After a tie game at the half, the Titans managed two scores while holding the Demons offense at arm’s length. In fact, Duncan managed just 75 yards offense while the Titans rushed for 258 and passed for 27 more yards in the win.
Week 4
Guthrie 35, Deer Creek 7 – The game was labeled by many as the game of the week in the state, but the BlueJays quickly took all the drama out in the rival game by scoring 14 quick first quarter points and controlling the game. Guthrie finished with 406 yards on offense and proved to be balanced – once more – by rushing for 220 and passing for 186 yards.
Carl Albert 59, Western Heights 8 – The Titans averaged 10-yards a play in a lopsided game from the beginning as the Titans jumped out to a 53-0 halftime lead.
Week 5
Guthrie 56, Ada 14 – The BlueJays scored on their first five possessions to begin the game while the Cougars averaged 290 yards of offense entering the game, but managed 194 yards on 109 yards passing and 85 rushing. Guthrie finished with 501 yards of offense including 357 coming on the ground.
Carl Albert 42, El Reno 14 – It was close at the half, but it was not close in the end. Carl Albert held a 14-0 lead at the break and finished with 468 yards of offense with 321 coming via the rushing game.
Week 6
Guthrie 60, Noble 0 – Noble managed just 98 yards of offense against the top rated defense in the state and the Bluejay front seven allowed just 27 rushing yards. The Bears had more rushing plays that went for either zero or negative yards (20) then they did in the positive category (19).
Carl Albert 48, Southeast 7 – Homecoming was a breeze for the Titans with quarterback Dillan Dansby rushing and passing for a score in the romp. Southeast was held to just 90 yards of offense.
