Guthrie Cross Country opens their season at Hennessey

The Guthrie cross country teams traveled Saturday morning to open their season at the Hennessey meet. The Lady Jays took second place in the two mile race finishing just behind Sequoyah-Tahlequah.

Last year’s 5A state runner up, Mercy Dement, led the way for the ladies as she finished second with a time of 13:18. Tori Wells (7th), Kaitlyn Leaty (14th), Josie Throckmorton (18th), and Sierra Warner (24th) helped the Lady Jays start their season strong.

The Guthrie Bluejays took first place as they edged out Oklahoma Christian School by 10 points.

As he has been doing in previous years, senior Trevor Sallee led the way on the boys side, finishing in second place with a time of 16:40. Another senior, JD Coonfield, showed once again his athleticism and commitment, finishing sixth with a time of 17:43 after being part of Guthrie’s football scrimmage the previous night.

Grant Mayer (8th), Mason Barney (9th), Loren Huskey (15th),William Knell (20th), Braden Hall(21st) helped the Jays take the first meet title of the year.

Guthrie will travel to Carl Albert next Friday. 

The junior high program also saw some great performances, as the Lady Jays came in second while the Bluejays took first place.

Rodrigo Solis Ruiz is a graduate of Guthrie High School is attending Oklahoma State University and majoring in sports media.
