Guthrie cross country teams headed back to State; Lady Jays capture regional championship

The Guthrie High School cross-country programs are headed back to the State meet. On Saturday, the Lady Jays captured the regional championship while the Bluejays brought home the runner-up trophy.

The Jays ran at Mustang’s Wildhorse Park for one of the two Class 5A regional meets.

Head coach Bryce Balenseifen expected a big win for the girls and that’s exactly how it ran out.

The girls finished with a team-low 57 points and kept their distance from Blanchard who finished second with 117 points.

Senior Kamryn continues her stellar career with a second-place finish with a time of 20:46. She was 22 seconds behind regional winner Audrey Mceelhaney of Elgin High School.

Freshman Taylor Schroder continues to put 5A on alert as she finished fifth overall with a time of 21:35.

“Time doesn’t reflect how good her (Taylor) race was,” her coach said.

Junior Peyton Read was the third runner to finish in the top 10 with a ninth-place finish in a time of 22:08.

Senior Hannah Smith was just outside of the top 10 with a respectable 12th-place finish.

Junior Raley Hooper finished 29th overall out of the 104 regional runners.

Guthrie and Lincoln Christian appear they will be heading for a showdown next week for the 5A state championship.

For the boys, they finished second behind Guymon. The Tigers finished with 50 points followed by the Jays’ 94 points. Both teams saw two runners finish in the top five.

Leading the way for the Jays were seniors Mason Mayer (17:12) and Eli Fortney (17:25). The duo finished fourth and fifth, respectively. The regional meet involved 118 runners.

Sophomore Isaiah Blevins finished 13th, sophomore Kallon Cyphers 24th, and freshman Josiah Dement 48th.

The Jays were missing a runner due to an injury but is expected back next week and is expected to benefit the team in the final race.

“I believe both teams will step up on the line next Saturday with a chance to win,” Balenseifen said.

The state meet will take place at Edmond Santa Fe High School on Saturday, Oct. 28. The girls will run at 10:15 a.m. and the boys will follow at 11 a.m.

The award assembly is scheduled for 11:45 a.m.
