Guthrie educator selected as Oklahoma Assistant Principal of the Year

Oklahoma City, OK – Dustin (Dusty) Throckmorton, Assistant Principal at Guthrie High School, has been named the 2017 Oklahoma Assistant Principal of the Year by the Oklahoma Association of Secondary School Principals (OASSP).

“Dusty Throckmorton is an eternal optimist. He cares deeply for the students and staff at Guthrie High School,” said Dr. Vickie Williams, Executive Director for OASSP. “He looks for the good in every situation and in each individual in which he has contact.  His energy is contagious and he goes to great lengths to ensure that school initiatives are implemented with fidelity.”

Mr. Throckmorton has served as the assistant principal at Guthrie High School for the past five years. Guthrie High School, much like the city of Guthrie, is rich in tradition and culture that is carried forward by the over 1,000 students and roughly 100 faculty members.

Upon learning that he had been selected as the Oklahoma Assistant Principal of the Year, Mr. Throckmorton said, “I am honored and humbled to be selected from such an exceptional group of nominees. I proudly accept this recognition and am thankful for my family, friends and school district that have been so supportive.”

Throckmorton makes in his personal goal to reach students, faculty, and staff on a personal level and to be of service to them. It is important to him that students see his investment in them as individuals.

“Mr. Throckmorton or Mr. ‘T’ is a true professional who cares deeply about kids,” said Dr. Mike Simpson, Superintendent of Guthrie Public Schools. “He balances school involvement, family, church and community as well as anyone I know. I’m honored to work alongside him every day in the quest to make our school district great. What a great choice that epitomizes humble professionalism.”

  • Sharon James, Charles Page High School, Sand Springs
  • Michelle Metcalf, Catoosa High School, Catoosa
  • Jon Mitchell, Enid High School, Enid
  • Lynn Peters, Waller Middle School, Enid

The NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals) National Assistant Principal of the Year program recognizes outstanding middle level and high school assistant principals who have succeeded in providing high quality learning opportunities for students. These assistant principals are acknowledged by their peers for the exemplary contributions they have made to the profession.

Each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity, and the U.S. Department of State Office of Overseas Schools may select one assistant principal to represent their state. From these state winners, three finalists are named as contenders for the National Assistant Principal of the Year award. The NASSP National Assistant Principal of the Year is selected from among the finalists.

State winners, finalists, and the 2017 NASSP National Assistant Principal of the Year will be announced in April 2017 during National Assistant Principals Week.

The Oklahoma Association of Secondary School Principals is under the umbrella of the Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administration. CCOSA is an incorporated, non-profit organization serving over 2,700 superintendents, assistant superintendents, principals, special education directors and central office administrators.
