Guthrie falls to Collinsville in Dual State championship

In the best run at Dual State in program history, the Guthrie High School wrestling team came up one dual short of a state title over the weekend in Enid.

Guthrie qualified for Dual State for the second year in a row. Before 2021, the Jays last participated in the tournament 29 years ago. However, last year, the Jays were out early with a 72-point loss to Duncan.

With the loss, came experience and drive in 2022.

The Bluejays entered the Class 5A, eight team field as the six seed, but made their presence known with a thrilling 36-33 Friday win over the three seed Elgin Owls.

Eli Kirk (120 pounds), Jake Carey (145), Coal Madison (195) and Hayden Simpson (220) each pinned their opponents to lead Guthrie in round one. The Bluejays’ other victories came from 138-pounder Braden Hall (technical fall), 152-pounder Bryson Hall (decision) and 182-pounder Spade Pool (major decision).

In the semifinals, the Jays were expecting to go up against the two seed Duncan Demons, again, but the seven seed Pryor pulled off the upset.

Guthrie needed each match to pull off the 37-32 win to advance to the finals with heavy favorite and top-ranked Collinsville.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 41-7 lead and never looked back with a 46-28 final.

It was the sixth Class 5A dual state title overall for the Cardinals, who have won four straight state tournament championships, but their first dual crown since 2015. They also lost in the dual state finals in 2016, 2017 and 2020, and were ranked No. 1 last year before withdrawing from the tournament for disciplinary reasons.

Collinsville wrestling head coach Wes Harding said his 2022 team may be his top dual teams he’s ever coached.

Guthrie now prepares for the upcoming regionals and state tournament.
