A Guthrie woman was arrested for child neglect and possession of drugs after her vehicle and home were found to be in complete filth. The five children were taken to safety by the Department of Human Services.
On Nov. 28, Sgt. Anthony Gibbs was dispatched to the alleyway of the 100 block of W. Harrison for a broken down vehicle. The officer notice the female driver had several injuries to her face and chest.
The woman, Melissa Grayson, 40, informed the officer she had a warrant for her arrest and attempted to shield the officer’s view of the back seat where a one-year-old male child was found not properly secured with a seat belt.
Gibbs says trash and food could be seen rotting once the door was opened.
“The entire vehicle was absolutely full of filth,” Gibbs said. “From one end to the other of the vehicle, the entire surface was covered with some type of trash or food that was in various states of decay.”
Gibbs observed the baby had food down the length of the front of his body and his diaper was soiled through.
“Underneath the child’s diaper, scalded. There was broken skin and bleeding from the child because of the excrement that was held close to the body,” Gibbs added.
Shortly after going through the vehicle, police responded to the family’s home at 111 A W. Harrison and found similar filth conditions. Trash was spilling out onto the floor and across countertops, dirty laundry piled two feet high and food molded throughout the baby’s swing and high chair.
Inside the home were four other children ranging in ages from five to 14-years-old.
According to the police report, Grayson admitted taking various amounts of drugs and that she last shot up at 5 a.m.
Officers found numerous amounts of drugs in Grayson’s purse, including five uncapped syringes.
“We’re probably talking about drug addiction, probably opiate addiction. It seems to create an apathy to not care about anything,” Gibbs added.
Grayson was formally charged on Nov. 30 and a $20,000 bond. She’s due back in court on Dec. 21.
