The 11th ranked Guthrie boys basketball team set out not only to capture a win, but in a manner of doing things right.

After suffering back-to-back losses to Midwest City and Bixby in the Del City/Midwest City Invitational Holiday Tournament, Guthrie picked up a 66-32 convincing win over Durant.

The BlueJays improved to 4-2 overall while Durant remains winless with an 0-9 start.

Listen to head coach Pete Papahronis as he talks about the three-day tournament with Chris Evans and Casey Porter.

Guthrie dashed out to a 7-0 start with Kai Callins providing the spark with five points in the first 1:55. In the beginning of the third quarter, Callins hit the first 5-points for the Jays to build a 41-12 gap. He finished with a game high 14 points.

The BlueJays kept the Lions in check by holding them to just 17 points total in the first 24 minutes thanks to their strong man-to-man defense that forced multiple turnovers.

Durant managed a field goal just before the half to get into double digits scoring.

The third quarter was much like the first two quarters before Durant got things going offensively in the fourth quarter with 15 points when the game was well in check.

Guthrie’s Jerrick Warren was named Guthrie’s Most Outstanding Player with 42 points in the three-day event along with steady defense and ability to handle pressure defenses from Midwest City and Bixby. Listen to his interview with Casey Porter

Up next for the Jays will be the McGuinness Tournament beginning on Thursday, January 5th when they take on Northwest Classen at 1:30. A second round match-up will feature either McGuinness or Yukon.
