Bixby’s second half spurt gets pass the Jays

It was the start that head coach Pete Papahronis wanted from his 5A under size BlueJays, but the 6A Bixby Spartans finished it their way.

On the second day of the Del City/Midwest City Invitational Holiday Tournament, Guthrie enjoyed a first half lead for 14:27, but Bixby took a 25-24 lead into the locker room en route to a 57-47 win.

The Jays fall to 3-2 overall with back-to-back with both losses coming from 6A schools.

Guthrie built up a 13-6 lead in the opening quarter before Bixby eventually tied it up at 19-all and again at 21. Bixby used a 7-0 run in less than two minutes to capture their first lead of the game with 4:30 to play until the half.

Out of the locker room, Guthrie built up a 4-point lead thanks to back-to-back field goals by Kai Callins. But, once again, Bixby tied the Jays up at 30 and 32-all and took the lead for good with three minutes to play in the third.

The BlueJays could not get within six points the rest of the way as Bixby started to warm up shooting the ball in the fourth quarter.

Senior Codee Gross paced the Jays with 15 points followed by Callins and fellow guard Jerrick Warren 13 points.

Guthrie Scorers: Codee Gross 15, Kai Callins 13, Jerrick Warren 13, Shron Parker 2, Bailey Nichols 2, L’liott Curry 2
