The Guthrie High School golf team will enter the final 18 holes of the Class 5A State Tournament with a four shot lead. Sophomore Luke Morgan will attempt to hold off the field for an individual title.
The Jays left the Cimarron Trails Golf Course, in Perkins, on Monday with a three-shot deficit after round one to Bishop McGuinness (316-313), but the Irish were slightly off par on the next 18 while the Jays held steady with a 317.
Guthrie shot a two round 633 and was followed up by the elite, 5A private schools in McGuinness (637) and Bishop Kelley (646).
Morgan scored a first round 70 and second round 71.
The 141 individual score is three shots better than Bishop Kelley’s senior Davis Woodliff’s 144 and Guymon’s senior Grayson Wallace’s, a Wichita State University signee, 145.
Guthrie’s freshmen Brady Hirzel provided a spark for the Jays with rounds of 78 and 81.
Sophomore Bo Robbins scored 81 and 85, while junior Luke Roach turned in 92 and 80 and sophomore Luke Dale with an 87 and 86.
The final 18 holes will be begin at 8:23 a.m. on Tuesday.
