Guthrie High School placed on lockdown after report of armed individual

Guthrie High School went into lockdown Thursday, March 13 afternoon after a student reported seeing an individual with a gun in the parking lot.

According to school officials, the report was made at approximately 12:38 p.m., prompting immediate action from staff. The School Resource Officer responded to the scene, while the Guthrie Police Department and Logan County Sheriff’s Office arrived shortly after.

As a precaution, Guthrie Upper Elementary was also placed on lockdown.

Authorities determined that six individuals, none of whom were students at Guthrie Public Schools, were meeting in the parking lot for a used car sale. One individual was taken into custody for possession of a firearm on a public school campus. Officials confirmed that none of the individuals entered the school building or attempted to gain entry.

The lockdown was lifted at 1:12 p.m. after officers secured the area.

Guthrie Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson praised the swift response of both students and law enforcement.

“We applaud the student who came forward to report what they saw as well as the swift action of our administration and School Resource Officer,” Simpson said. “The response by local law enforcement was swift, and everything was under control almost immediately. This highlights the importance of why we always tell our students to report anything suspicious. Nothing is more important than the safety of our students and staff.”

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
