A man was shot and killed by a Guthrie Police officer just after 12:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI).

Authorities say officers were conducting a welfare check in the 1600 block of S. Division St. when they approached a man. Moments later, shots were fired. The sequence of events leading up to the shooting remains unclear as the investigation is ongoing. Sources tell Guthrie News Page the welfare check was for a possible suicidal subject.

Officials identified the deceased as 54-year-old David Dunford. Witnesses report that Dunford had gone inside a cell phone store on S. Division St. to purchase a phone before the confrontation with law enforcement.

According to OSBI, Dunford was shot by the officer while he was inside his black truck. Multiple videos taken by bystanders show the truck attempting to back out of the parking lot with three Guthrie police officers nearby. Two officers then opened fire, fatally striking Dunford at the scene.

Investigators later recovered two firearms from inside Dunford’s vehicle.

As the OSBI continues its probe, the two officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave per standard protocol.

Neither the City of Guthrie nor the Guthrie Police Department has issued a public statement regarding the incident at this time.
