A structure fire in southern Logan County quickly spread into a large grass and timber fire Monday afternoon, drawing 12 of the county’s 14 fire departments and prompting crews to protect a nearby neighborhood.
Firefighters were initially dispatched to the 7000 block of S. Pine Street on Sunday afternoon for a structure fire. Multiple structures were reported burning in the area as the incident developed.
According to Logan County Emergency Management, the fire quickly spread north, crossed Seward Road, and continued into areas of thick trees and cedar.
By approximately 4:30 p.m., nearly every fire department in Logan County was being called to assist as the incident developed into a grass fire. A portion of Pine Street was closed to traffic as additional equipment and personnel arrived.
At 6 p.m., active fires remained between Seward and Camp roads east of Pine.
Firefighters were ultimately able to contain the fire within the mile section between Seward and Camp on the west side of Pine. Twelve of Logan County’s 14 fire departments participated in the response.
With the fire threatening the area, crews were staged near the Triple Crown Meadows neighborhood to provide structure protection if the flames continued moving in that direction.
Logan County District 1 provided a bulldozer to assist firefighters, while Oklahoma Forestry Services also brought in a dozer to help establish fire lines and contain the spread.
Logan County Emergency Management assisted incident command by tracking the large number of units and personnel at the scene while also providing firefighters with weather and wind updates.
Emergency Management also deployed a drone to provide an aerial view of the fire. The drone allowed officials to identify areas where fire remained active and helped direct crews through the heavily wooded terrain.
The Logan County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control in the area.
The Logan County group of the American Red Cross established a rehabilitation area at the nearby Dollar General, providing support for firefighters during the extended response.
Crews continued working into the night and had the fire largely mopped up between approximately 9:30 and 10 p.m.
Oklahoma Forestry Services planned to return to the area Monday to inspect the fire scene and make sure there were no remaining areas of concern.
No injuries were reported in the information released by Logan County Emergency Management.
