Former Guthrie Bluejay standout and NFL linebacker Kentrell Brothers will return home to be inducted into the Guthrie High School Hall of Fame.
Brothers, who went from starring on Friday nights in Guthrie to becoming an All-American at the University of Missouri and eventually playing four seasons in the National Football League, will be honored following the GHS Alumni Assembly.
The Hall of Fame ceremony will take place inside the Guthrie High School library immediately following the 9 a.m. assembly. Brothers will also be recognized later that evening at halftime of Guthrie’s football game against Blanchard.
The honor adds another chapter to a football journey that began with Brothers establishing himself as one of the most talented athletes to come through the Guthrie athletic program.
Brothers was a two-way standout for the Bluejays, playing wide receiver offensively and making his presence felt defensively as a linebacker and defensive end.
His senior season in 2010 was particularly impressive. Brothers hauled in 63 passes for 1,304 yards and 18 touchdowns while also recording 100 tackles and 19 sacks on defense.
He finished his Guthrie career with 156 receptions for 2,984 yards and established a school record with 51 career sacks.
Brothers’ accomplishments went well beyond football during his time at GHS. He also played basketball and tennis and was part of two state championship basketball teams.
After graduating from Guthrie, Brothers took his talents to the University of Missouri.
Following a redshirt season caused by a preseason injury in 2011, Brothers steadily developed into one of the top linebackers in college football.
He recorded 70 tackles and three interceptions during the 2013 season before leading Missouri with 122 tackles in 2014. That performance earned Brothers second-team All-SEC recognition from the Associated Press.
Then came a senior season that put the former Bluejay among the best defensive players in the country.
Brothers recorded 152 tackles in just 12 games in 2015, leading the nation in total tackles and tackles per game at 12.7. He added 12 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions, and three blocked kicks.
His performance earned him first-team All-SEC honors from both the conference’s coaches and the Associated Press.
The national recognition followed.
Brothers became the first Missouri linebacker to earn first-team All-America recognition from any publication when Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports selected him to their first teams. He was also a second-team Walter Camp All-American.
Brothers finished his Missouri career with 358 tackles, ranking eighth in school history at the conclusion of his career.
His football career was not finished.
The Minnesota Vikings selected Brothers in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft with the 160th overall pick. Minnesota viewed the former Guthrie standout as a linebacker who could also make an immediate impact on special teams.
Brothers appeared in 51 regular-season games for the Vikings from 2016 through 2019 and made one start. Much of his impact came on special teams, where he became a regular contributor for Minnesota.
From a state championship Bluejay to an All-American in the SEC and eventually an NFL player, Brothers put together a football career that few athletes from Guthrie have matched.
Now, more than 15 years after his final season wearing a Bluejay uniform, Brothers will return to where that journey began to take his place in the Guthrie High School Hall of Fame.
