Guthrie looks to continue momentum in home opener with Shawnee

The Guthrie Bluejays enter week one of the high school football season with a lot of confidence following last week’s convincing win in Enid. However, the Jays have had to refocus this week with not only another 6A opponent on the schedule, but an opponent coming off an emotional overtime loss.

The Shawnee Wolves have made the move from Class 5A to 6A-II and opened the season with a loss on their home field to Choctaw, 35-34, after a bobbled snap on the game’s final play.

Friday night’s game will mark the 29th meeting between these two programs since 1986. Shawnee leads the all-time series 16-12, including last year’s 27-13 win over the Jays.

The Wolves will showcase senior quarterback Heath Hunter.

Hunter did his part last week with 215 yards through the air and two touchdown passes. He added one more touchdown with his legs.

A season ago, he racked up over 2,700 yards. Shawnee fans are hopeful of another season with those type numbers. To do so, the Wolves will need some new faces on the offensive line to learn quickly.

The offensive line is anchored by junior Sergio Garcia.

Hunter will have two primary options at wide receiver in senior Trenton Skinner and junior Scout Cawvey. The duo combined for over 1,100 yards in 2017.

Last week, Skinner finished with 10 receptions for 158 yards and two scores, while Cawvey added three receptions for 28 yards.

A concern for the Wolves will be the health status of running backs Tre’Juan Shaw and move-in Elijah Powis, who were sidelined late in last week’s game with injuries.

Shaw, who ran for over 700 yards last season, scored two touchdowns last week before the injury.

Shawnee started eight sophomores and a freshman against Choctaw.

Despite injuries and youth, Shawnee has proven over the years they will not be an easy opponent for the Bluejays on Friday night.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and can be heard on Hot 93.7 FM or on the Guthrie News Page Youtube page.
