Gene Stephenson built the Wichita State University baseball program from the ground up, taking the Shockers to seven College World Series and the 1989 NCAA championship. This past weekend, the Guthrie native was inducted into the Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association.
Stephenson, who was born in Guthrie and was inducted into the Guthrie High School (GHS) Hall of Fame in 1994, was enshrined with Sand Springs baseball coach Bill Hutson and former Minnesota Twins coach and Okmulgee resident Rod Gardenhire.
Stephenson coached at Wichita State from 1978 to 2013 and amassed a 1,798-647-3 record.
After graduating from GHS, Stephenson went to the University of Missouri on a football scholarship, but he also played baseball.
All three inductees will have a display inside the Oklahoma Territorial Capital Sports Museum in downtown Guthrie. Stephenson was in town last month to help celebrate the museum’s 20 year anniversary.
