Guthrie and Carl Albert squared off on the mat Thursday evening and despite just seven matches, the BlueJays came away with five wins for the 35-19 Homecoming win.
Guthrie earned their scoring advantage in the heavier weights. Andrew Toney and Connor Howard each scored pins to give the Jays the lead (23-19) for good in front of a full Guthrie High School gymnasium.
Before the high school took the mat, the Junior High program easily won their dual with the Titans 59-18.
Toney, who wrestled up a weight and was giving up nine pounds, jumped out to a 2-0 start before getting the pin with :42 left in the first period.
Howard need all three quarters before scoring his pin with :49 left in the match. Before the pin, Howard led 5-0 in a match he controlled from the first whistle.
Each squad received two forfeits.
The most intriguing match entering the dual was at 126 pounds with Alex Nelson and Garrett Chappell – both state qualifiers a season ago. Nelson, however, kept his distance the entire match. In the second period, Nelson got a reverse to go up 4-0 and finished the period up 8-2 before winning the match 8-3.
In the middle weights, Guthrie got the edge with a tech fall win for Tyler Mahan and a decision for Joe Kuruvilla.
Mahan (138 pounds) built a 5-0 first period lead and an 11-0 advantage after the first four minutes en route to a 17-2 win.
Kuruvilla (145 pounds) rallied from an 0-3 deficit for the 7-5 win. He added five points in the second period to go with two escape points in the final period.
Next up for the Jays will be a tall task as the Blackwell Maroons travel to Guthrie on Jan. 21. Mat time is set for 6 p.m. inside the Guthrie Junior High.
