Guthrie preparing for 51st McGuinness Classic

The Guthrie boys basketball team makes a return trip to the McGuinness Classic for the three-day event beginning on Thursday. This year marks the 51st season for the Classic and is the state’s longest boys running tournament. The field will consist of 6A and 5A teams.

The field will remain the same this season as it was last year with the exception of the Yukon Millers replacing Carl Albert. This will be the third consecutive season Guthrie has played in the classic with an overall record of 5-6, including claiming the 2009 championship.

The Jays (3-2) will open up with 6A’s Norman North Timberwolves and will be a rematch of last years consolation game that saw the Jays hold on to a 46-43 win.

Last year the Jays, who were playing without Kentrell Brothers, dropped their first game to McGuinness before pulling off back-to-back wins against Northwest Classen and Norman North. Read more about last years tournament.

Yukon (6-1) and Deer Creek (3-1) will begin the tournament with a 1:30 tip, Thursday, and Northwest Classen (6-1) and Norman (2-6) following that game at 3:00. Both games reflect the top half of the bracket.

The bottom half of the bracket will begin the evening session starting at 6:00 with host McGuinness (8-4) taking on Edmond North (2-5) followed by Guthrie and Norman North at 7:30. View the complete McGuinness Classic bracket.

Guthrie Sports Page will have coverage of the Classic beginning on Thursday.

Here is the video highlights of the 2009 Guthrie squad, who won the 49th edition of the Classic.
