Guthrie Public Schools held their convocation at the Guthrie Junior High on Tuesday morning as they prepare to begin holding classes on Friday.
Teachers and staff throughout the district filled the Junior High auditorium after taking in some coffee and doughnuts provided by the Guthrie Kiwanis Club.
The Guthrie High School marching band provided entertainment in the first 10 minutes, including the national anthem with the aid of the GHS JROTC.
Steve Hanna spoke on behalf of the Guthrie Education Foundation and was followed by each school’s principal who introduced their new personnel.
In total, 29 names were introduced, including two at Cotteral, one at Central, 9 at Fogarty, five at Guthrie Upper Elementary School, seven at the Junior High and five at Guthrie High School.
Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson, who begins his fifth year leading the school district, took the stage for his presentation of ‘The light at the end of the tunnel.”
In his first convocation speech in 2012, Simpson talked about looking forward to passing a bond issue and improving communication with the community. In 2016, the lead man talked about the present time of education (particularly with the legislature).
Simpson said there were signs of hope.
“We have the highest level of engagement by educators and parents in the politics of education since 1990.”
Simpson added a support of reduced testing and elimination of end of instruction testing has education moving in the right direction.
Afterwards, teachers met for a ratification of negotiated agreement. The Board of Education is expected to meet Wednesday morning to accept the agreement.
